Bikaner was founded in 1488 AD by the Rathore prince Bika. The city surrounded by rich desert so called City of Desert. Maharaja Ganga Singh (1880-1943), a most illustrious ruler of Bikaner, is remembered for his work in the city. Bikaner city has five gates, palaces, forts, havelies and temples made of red and yellow sandstone. The traditional aura in the city is evident in its colourful bazaars and havelies. A peep into rural Bikaner is like viewing a spectrum. It offers varieties of aspects of interests such as adventure, social customs, culture and traditions of the people of various desert communities, which are as varied as their costumes, ornaments, jewellery and artistic footwear. They are known for their unity in diversity, arts, crafts, folk, theatre and melody of folkorewell preserved by Bhopas the wandering minstrels, Charnas the bards & story tellers and Dholis the traditional desert musicians and entertainers. The town is also famous for delicacies like RASGULLAS, BHUJIAS and PAPADS.
